Gansu & Lanzhou — the Silk Road and the Tibetan plateau

Rainbow mountains at Zhangye, the western gate of the Great Wall, the painted caves of Dunhuang — or head south instead into the grasslands and monasteries of Gannan. Two very different Gansu journeys, both built from Lanzhou.

Where we go

Lanzhou · the gateway

Why every Gansu journey starts in Lanzhou

Low, easy and well connected

Lanzhou sits at just 1,520 m on the Yellow River, which makes it the gentlest place to start before you climb to the plateau or drive into the desert. High-speed rail runs west to Zhangye and Jiayuguan, and flights connect the whole corridor.

The original beef noodles

Lanzhou is where hand-pulled beef noodles were born, and the city's Hui Muslim community means halal food is standard rather than something you hunt for. We build a noodle breakfast into every route — locals eat it before eight in the morning.

Two directions, one base

Head west and you get the Silk Road: Danxia, the Great Wall and Dunhuang. Head south and you climb into the Tibetan plateau at Xiahe and the Gannan grasslands. Qinghai Youxuan runs both, and tells you honestly which one fits your dates and your group.

Common questions

Gansu travel, answered

Before you go →
Which Gansu route should I choose?
If you want the classic images — rainbow mountains, the Great Wall gate and the Mogao Caves — take the Hexi Corridor west. If you have already seen the Silk Road and want green grasslands and monasteries, take the Gannan south route.
How do I get to Lanzhou from Malaysia?
Kuala Lumpur connects to Lanzhou via Chengdu, Xi'an or Beijing, or you can fly into Xining and take the high-speed rail across. We time the connection and meet you on arrival.
Do I need to book Mogao Caves tickets in advance?
Yes — the A-type tickets sell out weeks ahead in peak season. We book them the moment you confirm your dates, then build the rest of the Dunhuang days around your cave slot.
Is the Gannan route high altitude?
Xiahe sits at 2,900 m and the Sangke grassland rises to about 3,400 m. It is higher than the Hexi Corridor but lower than Qinghai Lake, and we still build a gentle first night.
Is halal food available in Gansu?
Yes. Gansu has a large Hui Muslim population, especially around Lanzhou, and halal beef noodles and roast lamb are local staples. We name the restaurants along your route.
How much does a Gansu tour cost?
Private tours start from around RM 1,500 per person in the off-season up to RM 2,800 in the summer peak, depending on days, hotel grade and group size. Written, itemised quote always.
