How long is the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop?

About 2,400 km with no backtracking, typically done in 8 days and most comfortably in 10. A 12-day version adds Golmud, Chaerhan salt lake and a slow stay in Xining.

How much does the Grand Loop cost from Malaysia?

Do I need to book Mogao Caves tickets in advance?

Yes. Mogao A-type tickets sell out weeks ahead in peak season, so we book them as soon as you confirm your dates.

Is the Grand Loop suitable for families and elderly travellers?

Yes with correct pacing. We front-load altitude carefully, cap the two long driving days, carry oxygen and a pulse oximeter, and recommend the 10-day version for families.

A circle, not an out-and-back

You start and finish in Xining, and the road never repeats itself. That matters more than it sounds — on the plateau, an out-and-back route doubles the driving and halves the scenery.

Xining Caojiabao (XNN) is the start and end of every loop. We time your arrival so day one is always gentle.

Altitude placed carefully

The loop climbs to 3,196 m at Qinghai Lake on day two, then settles to 1,140 m at Dunhuang. We use that descent as built-in recovery.

Two long days, the rest easy

Only days four and five run 500–600 km. Everything else is a comfortable three to four hours.

Named Muslim kitchens in Xining, Chaka, Dunhuang, Zhangye and Qilian, with prayer stops placed on the driving days.

Book Mogao and Chaka early

The Dunhuang Mogao Caves A-type tickets and the Chaka salt-flat train sell out weeks ahead in peak season. We lock both the moment you confirm dates — this is the single most common thing DIY travellers get wrong.

Days four and five are the long ones

500–600 km through open Gobi. We break them with viewpoints and rest stops, and the car carries water and snacks. If you have small children, the 10-day version splits these days.

Altitude is front-loaded

The climb happens on days two and three, then the route drops to Dunhuang at 1,140 m. We carry oxygen for the whole loop and treat day one as an acclimatisation day, not a touring day.

Halal every night

Qinghai's Hui Muslim community means 清真 restaurants from Xining to Dunhuang. We name each night's kitchen in advance and place prayer stops on the long driving days.

When to go

July is the best single month — Menyuan's rapeseed in full gold and the lake at its bluest. Late June and September give you most of the scenery with fewer people.
