Do Malaysians Need a Visa for China? (2026 Rules)

Malaysian passport holders can currently enter China visa-free for short trips. Here is how the rule works, how long you may stay, and what to prepare.

Do Malaysians Need a Visa for China? (2026 Rules)

This is the question we are asked more than any other, so here is the current situation in plain language. Note that visa rules can change, so always double-check with the Chinese embassy or an official source before you fly — but for most Malaysian holiday-makers travelling to Qinghai and Gansu, the news is good.

The short answer

Under the current China–Malaysia reciprocal arrangement, Malaysian ordinary passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for tourism and business for short stays. You do not need to apply for a tourist (L) visa in advance for a normal two-week trip.

How long can you stay?

  • Per visit: up to 15 days visa-free for tourism.
  • Purpose: tourism, family visits, business, transit — not study or employment.
  • If you need longer: a 30-day or 60-day visa can still be applied for through the embassy or a visa centre.

What you still need to carry

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with blank pages.
  • A return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation (your tour booking letter works).
  • Details of your first hotel or host — keep our booking confirmation on your phone.

At the airport

Qinghai and Gansu are reached via Xining Caojiabao Airport (XNN) or Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW), usually with a domestic connection from a major hub such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chengdu. Your Malaysian passport is scanned at the visa-free counter and you are stamped in. Our driver meets you in arrivals with your name board.

Practical tips

  • Mobile payment is everywhere — set up Alipay and link your Malaysian card before you fly.
  • Buy a travel SIM or eSIM that includes mainland China data; some global plans do not.
  • Keep a printed copy of your itinerary and our contact number.

Our advice

Rules are reviewed periodically, so treat this as a guide rather than a guarantee. If your trip is within the next few months, confirm the latest position, then let us handle the on-the-ground logistics — tell us your dates and we will prepare a booking letter for immigration.
