Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Xining: Routes & Tips
How to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Xining or Lanzhou for a Qinghai–Gansu tour — routes, connections, best booking windows and arrival tips.

There is no direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Xining, so every Qinghai trip involves one connection. It sounds complicated; it is not, once you know the options.
The two arrival airports
- Xining Caojiabao (XNN): the natural gateway to Qinghai Lake and the start of the loop.
- Lanzhou Zhongchuan (LHW): good if you want to begin from the Gansu side.
Typical routing
Fly KL to a major Chinese hub — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu or Xi'an — then take a domestic flight to Xining or Lanzhou. Total travel is usually 10–14 hours door to door including the connection.
Booking tips
- Book the international and domestic legs together where possible, so a delay is handled as one ticket.
- Allow at least 3 hours at the hub for the connection on separate tickets.
- Prices are lowest 2–3 months out; peak summer fares rise sharply.
- Check that your ticket includes a checked bag — some domestic fares do not.
On arrival
Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and takes you straight to your hotel, so there is no taxi negotiation after a long flight. See the Malaysians to Qinghai page for the full arrival guide, or check the visa rules.
