Grand Loop: 7, 8 or 10 Days — Which Fits You?
Seven days is tight, eight is classic, ten is relaxed. An honest comparison of Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop durations to help you choose the right one.

The most common planning question we get is simply: how many days do we need? The Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop covers around 2,400 km, so the answer genuinely changes the trip. Here is the honest comparison.
7 days — the tight version
Doable, but the driving days run long — several at 500–600 km through open Gobi — and any hiccup squeezes the rest. You see the headlines (Qinghai Lake, Zhangye, Dunhuang) but with little breathing room. Fine for fit travellers short on leave; not what we recommend for families.
8 days — the classic
This is the sweet spot, and what most of our guests choose. The long drives stay manageable, you get a proper afternoon at Qinghai Lake, a full Dunhuang day, and one free evening in Xining. If you are unsure, pick eight.
10 days — the relaxed one
Ten days absorbs the long drives and adds free time in Xining and Dunhuang, a slower pace at altitude, and room for a spontaneous detour. This is what we suggest for older travellers, families with young children, and photographers.
What none of them can change
Distances are real. Qinghai and Gansu are vast, and no itinerary can make a 600 km Gobi day short. What we can do is break the drives with viewpoints, good food and rest stops — and set honest expectations up front.
How to choose
If leave is the constraint, 7 will work with the right attitude. If comfort matters, 10 repays the extra days many times over. For nearly everyone in between, 8 is the answer. Tell us your dates and group and we will map the right length for you.
