Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains: A Visitor Guide
How to visit Zhangye Danxia National Geopark — best viewpoints, best light, shuttle-bus tips and how it fits a Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop.

The Rainbow Mountains of Zhangye are one of the most photographed sights in all of China, and for once the photos barely oversell it. But there is a right way and a wrong way to visit. Here is how we plan it for our guests.
What you are actually seeing
These are layered sandstone and mineral bands — reds, oranges, yellows, greys — folded and tilted over millions of years into a striped landscape. It is a national geopark, entered by shuttle bus with a series of numbered viewing platforms.
The viewpoints, ranked
- Platform 4 (Seven-Colour Screen): the classic wide shot — the most spectacular, and the busiest.
- Platform 1 & 2: closest to the striped ridges; great for detail.
- Platform 3: quieter, with sweeping valley views.
- Platform 5: the highest, best for sunset over the whole range.
Best time and light
Late afternoon into sunset is when the colours deepen and the crowds thin. Midday light flattens the stripes. If your schedule allows, arrive about two hours before sunset.
Practical tips
- The park is exposed and windy — bring a light jacket even in summer.
- You cannot walk off the platforms; the shuttle bus is the only way around.
- Sunset is the peak exit time; we allow extra buffer so you are not stuck in the queue.
How it fits your trip
Zhangye Danxia is a highlight of the Qinghai–Gansu Grand Loop, usually on day five or six. We time your arrival for the golden hour and pair it with the nearby Binggou Danxia for a quieter second look. See the full Gansu route.
