Is Qinghai Safe for Families with Young Children?
Travelling the Qinghai and Gansu loop with children — altitude, long drives, food, safety and how we pace a family itinerary.

Qinghai is a wonderful destination for families — spacious, uncrowded and full of open landscapes children remember for years. But it is a plateau, and family trips need a little more planning. Here is the honest picture.
Safety overall
Qinghai and Gansu are among the safer regions of China to travel: low crime, friendly people and well-maintained highways. The main things to manage with children are altitude and long driving days, not safety in the street sense.
Altitude and children
- Children generally adapt to altitude as well as adults, sometimes better.
- Keep the first day gentle — we build this into every family itinerary.
- Watch for unusual tiredness or headaches and tell your guide immediately.
- For infants and children with heart or lung conditions, check with a doctor first.
Long drives
The Grand Loop has some 500–600 km days. With children we add more breaks, plan shorter driving legs where possible, and build in free afternoons every few days.
Food
Along our routes, halal food is plentiful and children's favourites — noodles, rice, grilled meat, fruit — are everywhere. We note snack stops and familiar options in the plan.
How we pace family trips
Shorter first day, one free afternoon every three days, capped driving days and oxygen for everyone. See the families section or tell us your children's ages and we will design around them.
