Lanzhou: Beef Noodles & the Yellow River City
Lanzhou is the gateway to Gansu and the home of real beef noodles. What to see along the Yellow River, and the food you must try.

Lanzhou is where many Gansu journeys begin, and it deserves more than a transit stop. It is a Yellow River city of bridges, night markets and — most famously — the home of authentic beef noodles.
The beef noodles
Real Lanzhou beef noodles (lamian) are nothing like the instant version abroad. Each bowl is pulled to order, the broth is clear and beefy, and it is usually eaten for breakfast. The classic order is "one bowl, extra beef." Most noodle shops are halal, marked with the 清真 sign.
Along the Yellow River
- Zhongshan Bridge: the "first bridge over the Yellow River," a walkable iron bridge at the heart of the city.
- Waterwheel Park: historic wooden waterwheels that once irrigated the valley.
- Riverside promenade: a pleasant evening walk with the city lights.
Other highlights
- Gansu Provincial Museum: home of the famous "Flying Horse of Gansu."
- Baita Mountain: views over the whole valley.
- Night market: for skewers and local snacks.
How it fits your trip
Lanzhou is the start of our Gansu route and a key stop on the Grand Loop. We usually pair it with a proper beef-noodle breakfast before heading out. Ask us to add a city half-day.
