Mingsha Dunes & Crescent Lake, Dunhuang
Camel rides, sand-sledding and a desert lake that never dries up — how to enjoy Mingsha Dunes and Crescent Lake at the right time of day.

Right beside Dunhuang city, the Mingsha ("singing sand") Dunes rise above a small spring-fed lake shaped like a crescent moon. It is a classic, and it is genuinely fun — with camels, sand-sledding and big desert views.
The star: Crescent Lake
A spring-fed lake in the middle of towering dunes, it has not dried up for two thousand years despite the surrounding desert. The classic photo is from the dune above, looking down at the crescent and its pavilions.
Things to do
- Camel ride: the iconic way to cross the dunes in a caravan.
- Sand-sledding: a fast, dusty, memorable slide down the slope.
- Climb the dune: hard work in loose sand, but the sunset view is worth it.
- Stargazing: the desert sky at night is extraordinary.
Timing
Go in the late afternoon into sunset: the sand cools, the light glows gold, and the lake takes on its best colour. Midday is brutally hot. Bring a scarf, sunglasses and water.
How it fits your trip
We pair Mingsha with the Mogao Caves on a Dunhuang day — caves in the morning, dunes in the late afternoon. See the Grand Loop.
