Qilian Mountains: Qinghai's Green Highlands
The Qilian Mountains offer grassland scenery to rival Switzerland — snow peaks, meadows and yaks. How to visit on a Qinghai–Gansu tour.

Ask our driver-guides for their favourite scenery in Qinghai and many will say Qilian. The Qilian Mountains rise between Qinghai and Gansu, and the grasslands below them look almost alpine — snow peaks, deep meadows, herds of yaks and sheep.
What makes it special
- Contrast: rolling green meadow against sharp snow peaks.
- Space and quiet: far fewer crowds than Qinghai Lake.
- Culture: Tibetan and Mongolian herding communities still work these pastures.
What to see
- Qilian grassland: the heart of the scenery, best in summer when it is green and full of wildflowers.
- Zhuluo town and viewpoints: quiet valleys with snow views.
- The Qilian pass: a high road with sweeping panoramas across the plateau.
Practical points
Altitude here runs 2,800–3,200 m, sometimes higher, so it is one place to take it slow. Evenings are cold year-round. The season is short — mid-June to early September for full green.
How it fits your trip
Qilian is a highlight of the west side of the Grand Loop. See the Qinghai route or build a custom trip around it.
