Qinghai 8-Day Road Trip: Notes from the Driver's Seat
An honest day-by-day breakdown of an 8-day Qinghai loop: driving hours, altitude gains, where to sleep and which stops are worth the detour.
Eight days is the sweet spot for a first Qinghai trip. Seven feels rushed, ten starts to repeat itself. What follows is the version we actually run for Malaysian guests who want lakes, grassland and monasteries without spending the whole holiday in a car.
The shape of the loop
- Day 1–2 Xining (2,261 m) — land, sleep, acclimatise. Kumbum Monastery is 40 minutes away and gentle on the lungs.
- Day 3 Xining → Qinghai Lake (3,196 m) — about 150 km and 2.5 hours with photo stops.
- Day 4 Lake → Chaka Salt Lake (3,059 m) — the mirror effect depends on a windless morning, so go early.
- Day 5 Chaka → Qilian (2,800 m) — the most beautiful driving day of the trip, across grassland passes.
- Day 6 Qilian → Xining — back down, with time for a proper halal dinner.
- Day 7–8 buffer — Menyuan in July, or a rest day for shopping and laundry.
Driving maths nobody tells you
Google Maps timings are optimistic on the plateau. A "3-hour" leg reliably becomes four once you add photo stops, yak herds crossing the road and one long lunch. We budget 200–260 km per day and no more. Beyond that, the person in the back seat stops enjoying it.
Where altitude actually bites
The jump that surprises people is not Qinghai Lake — it is sleeping at Chaka or a high grassland pass on the first or second night. Spend your first two nights in Xining at 2,261 m and you will barely notice 3,196 m later. Do it the other way round and someone gets a headache.
What we would cut
If you only have seven days, cut the Qilian extension rather than the salt lake. Qilian is spectacular but it is also the leg that adds the most driving per unit of scenery.
