Qinghai Lake vs Chaka Salt Lake: Both Worth It?
Two very different lakes, often visited side by side. How Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake compare, and the best order to see them.

Most Qinghai itineraries include both of these, and guests often ask which one to prioritise if time is short. The honest answer: they are not competitors — they are completely different experiences.
Qinghai Lake
China's largest lake, huge and blue, ringed by grasslands and mountains. It is about scale and sky — the feeling of standing at the edge of something vast. Best in summer for green grass and rapeseed, best in autumn for colour and calm.
Chaka Salt Lake
A smaller, shallow salt lake near the Qinghai Lake area, famous as the "Mirror of the Sky." On a still day the thin water film reflects the clouds perfectly, giving that glassy, endless look. It is more of a photography spot than a landscape.
The comparison
- Scale: Qinghai Lake is vast; Chaka is intimate and walkable.
- Photos: Chaka wins for reflection shots — but only on a calm, clear day.
- Feel: Qinghai Lake is about the wilderness; Chaka is about the image.
The catch with Chaka
Chaka is weather-dependent. Wind, rain or crowds break the mirror effect entirely. We watch the conditions and, if it is windy, will tell you honestly rather than sell you a disappointment.
Best order
Visit Chaka in the early morning before the wind picks up, then Qinghai Lake in the afternoon on the way through. See our Qinghai route to plan both into one day.
