Xining Travel Guide: What to See in Qinghai's Capital
Xining is the gateway to Qinghai. Here is what to see in the city — Kumbum Monastery, Dongguan Mosque, the night market and local food.

Xining is where most Qinghai trips begin, yet travellers often rush through it on the way to the lake. Give it a day and it rewards you — it is a relaxed, welcoming city at 2,260 m with real culture and great food.
Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Si)
One of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, about 25 km from the city. Golden roofs, butter sculptures, and pilgrims prostrating in the courtyards. Go in the morning and allow three hours.
Dongguan Mosque
Right in the city, this is one of China's largest and most important mosques, with a distinctive Chinese architectural style. A moving place to visit for Muslim travellers, and a reminder of how central the Muslim community is to Qinghai life.
The night market
Xining's food streets come alive after dark — lamb skewers, hand-pulled noodles, niangpi and sweet snacks. Many stalls are halal. This is where you eat like a local.
Other highlights
- Qinghai Provincial Museum: excellent context on the region's history and ethnic groups.
- Beishan Mosque and markets: for a feel of everyday city life.
- Riverside parks: a gentle evening walk.
How we use Xining in itineraries
We usually give guests a slow first day here — good for acclimatising at 2,260 m — before heading to the lake. See the full Qinghai route and how Xining fits, or ask about a city day.
