7 Mistakes First-Time China Travellers Make
From underestimating distances to skipping mobile payment setup — the common mistakes first-time China travellers make, and how to avoid them.

Every season we watch the same handful of avoidable problems trip up first-time visitors. Learn from them and your Qinghai–Gansu trip gets easier immediately.
1. Underestimating the distances
Qinghai and Gansu are vast. A "short" hop on the map can be 500 km of open desert. Be realistic about how many days you need — see our 7/8/10-day guide.
2. Not setting up mobile payment
China is nearly cashless. Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before you fly, or you will be stuck.
3. Rushing the first day at altitude
Xining is at 2,260 m. Book a gentle first day instead of a 600 km drive, and let your body catch up.
4. Booking flights without a connection buffer
Separate tickets mean separate risk. Allow at least three hours at the hub.
5. Assuming halal food is hard to find
In Qinghai it is everywhere. See the halal food guide.
6. Packing for the wrong season
The plateau is cool year-round and cold at night. Layers beat fashion — packing list here.
7. Trying to do too much
The best Qinghai trips leave room to breathe. Fewer stops, longer stays, better memories.
